Judicial Commission to Spread Network

The Judicial Commission and nine regional legal aid NGOs signed a memorandum of understanding on Friday to establish regional monitoring posts in nine provinces in an attempt to expand the national justice-monitoring network.
"This monitoring network is an absolute necessity to ensuring law enforcement in Indonesia," commission secretary general Muzayyin Mahbub told The Jakarta Post. "I believe it will help the commission greatly."
The commission had previously cited "the inability to legally establish offcial regional offices and the low level of public awareness of the need to report ethical violations by regional judges" as two reasons to create the monitoring network.
"These posts are expected to assist the commission handle public complaints and monitor judges performances in their respective provinces," commission spokesperson Asep Rahmat Jafar said.
During the 2009-2010 period, the commission had established similar posts in nine other regions: North Sumatra, Riau, South Sumatra, East Java, East Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Bali and West Nusa Tenggara.
The nine posts altogether monitored 35 trials and processed 32 public complaints during the period.
This year, the new posts will be established in Aceh, West Sumatra, Lampung, Jakarta, West Java, Central Java, Yogyakarta, Central Sulawesi and North Sulawesi.
